FARM TROTTERS PRESS RELEASE 10/10/2004
SOUTHEND
10k 03/10/04 Grange
Farm Trotters runners were in action on several fronts over a busy week
for the running club Last
Sunday saw 12 members take part in the Southend 10k. The course was an “out
and back” with conditions pretty good for running with just a light sea
breeze which the runners could feel at the turn at the 5 kilometre point. Howard
Jardine was first Trotter home in 79th position and 5th
placed male over 50 in a time of 38.17. The ladies were led home by Pru
Hayhow who finished 430th overall and was 8th best
Lady over 35 and 42nd Lady overall in a time of 45.59. The
other Trotters who took part with their times and positions were David
Cronk (206th, 41.30); Stephen Cardnell (245th,
42.31); Richard Humphrey (253rd, 42.45); Rob Gall (286th,
43.18); Raymond Challis (562nd, 47.46); Nigel Thomas (565th,
47.47); Stephen Easom (591st, 48.07); Phil Sutterby (640th,
48.43); Chris George (903rd, 52.21); Patricia Sams (1488th,
61.01) CLARENDON
WAY MARATHON 03/10/04 Meanwhile
husband and wife Trotters John and Sue Clarke were taking part in the
Clarendon Way off road marathon in Winchester. The race started at
Winchester College on the banks of the river Itchen before passing through
some stunning countryside in Hampshire and Wiltshire before finishing at
Wyvern College, Laverstock in Salisbury. The
Clarkes ran the course together finishing in 4 hours 17 minutes and 36
seconds. John was 93rd male and 15th in the 40 to 45
age group while Sue was 14th female and 5th in the
45 to 50 age group. YATELEY
YOMP TRAIL PLUS ADVENTURE RACE 03/10/04 Another
husband and wife Trotter team, Chris and Pru Hayhow, plus Tara Corbett
were also west of London last weekend taking part in the Yateley Yomp
Adventure Race. The
race was run as a team of three and involved firstly a three kilometre run
followed by a rather bizarre six legged ski race with all three members of
the team having their feet strapped to two planks of wood which they then
had to cover 100 metres on. It was then onto mountain bikes for 24
kilometres of challenging off road biking. This was then followed by
another run and then a 1km paddle in an inflatable canoe. Finally came
another short run followed by a scramble up a cargo net and over a
slippery wall to finish. The
Grange Farm team finished the gruelling event in just over 3 hours and
were 41st out of 115 teams overall and 9th out of 29
mixed sex teams. NORTH
ESSEX CROSS COUNTRY LEAGUE GREAT NOTLEY 10/10/04 The
North Essex Cross Country League kicked off this weekend with a fast
course run over the fields and mounds surrounding the Great Notley
Discovery Centre just off the new A120. Dunmow
club Grange Farm Trotters came 8th overall in the event which
Chelmsford club Springfield Striders won, with Colchester Harriers second. There
were some fine individual performance from the Trotters who were out in
force for the start of the cross country season: Steve Reed came in 11th
and Howard Jardine was 26th in the men’s race while Sue
Feldman in 18th and Rachel Offord in 24th led home
the ladies. The
other Trotters running were for the Men: David Cronk (68th),
Steve Cardnell (75th), John Clarke (77th), Richard
Humphrey (88th), Nigel Thomas (109th), Chris Hayhow
(110th), Duncan Anniss (118th), Steve Easom (133rd),
David Kerry (147th), Rob Gall (158th), and for the
Ladies : Tara Corbett (32nd), Dawn Wallace (37th),
Jules Reeves (45th), Sandra Smith (67th), Amanda
Bulgin (71st) and Caroline Claisse (72nd). Pru
Hayhow retired unwell. There were 177 men and 78 ladies in the race. KENILWORTH
HALF MARATHON 10/10/04 Meanwhile
the busy week of Trotter running activity was rounded off by a fine
performance from the club’s Midlands’ representative, Sally Baker who
was first placed female in the Kenilworth Half Marathon, finishing in a
time of 1 hours 26 minutes on a very undulating course. INGATESTONE 5 19/09/04 Twelve
Grange Farm Trotters took part in the 21st annual running of
the Ingatestone 5 mile road race last Sunday. The
course was fairly flat and fast for the first four miles with a draining 1
mile uphill climb at the end to the finish. With
the race counting towards the Trotter’s own internal championship,
racing their own team mates became a priority. First Trotter home was
Howard Jardine in a time of 31 mins and 5 seconds, with Darren Thomas next
home nearly two minutes later in 32.52. David Cronk and Richard Humphrey
battled it out for the third Trotter position with a sprint finish to the
line, David just pipping Richard in a time of 33.56, 1 second ahead of his
team mate. There
were only two Ladies running for the Trotters and they were also engaged
in a dramatic sprint to the line, with less than a second between them Pru
Hayhow just edged out Sue Clarke in a time of 35.23. Sue took consolation
in the fact that she won first prize in the Ladies Super Vet category
overall. The
full list of Trotters and their times were as follows: Howard Jardine
31.05; Darren Thomas 32.52; David Cronk 33.56; Richard Humphrey 33.57;
Steve Cardnell 34.31; John Clarke 34.36; Pru Hayhow 35.23; Sue Clarke
35.23; Duncan Anniss 35.59; John Hardy 36.01; Steve Easom 38.32; Nigel
Thomas 38.56 YORKSHIREMAN
OFF ROAD HALF MARATHON 12/09/04 Grange
Farm Trotters John and Sue Clarke ventured deep into Bronte territory last
weekend as they took part in the Yorkshireman Off Road Half Marathon in
Haworth. This
was a tough event and John and Sue had to battle with the elements as they
completed the thirteen point one mile race, which included 1500ft of
ascents across the windswept Yorkshire moors made famous by the book “Wuthering
Heights” The
pair were classified 106th and 107th, finishing
together in a time of 2 hours 20 minutes and 30 seconds, with Sue taking 3rd
place in the Female Super Vet category. 186 runners took part. BARDFIELD
10k 12/09/04 Several
members of the Grange Farm Trotters and Dunmow Runners running clubs took
part in the Bardfield 10k last weekend. High
winds caused some problems for the runners on the mixed road and off road
course. The ladies fared particularly well with Pru Hayhow second and
Rachel Offord fourth. Anita Cox of Dunmow Runners picked up second place
in class. Other
runners taking part for Grange Farm were Darren Thomas, Paul Offord,
Karen, Amanda, Sandra Smith, Chris Hayhow, Jasper Corbett, Richard
Humphrey, Steve Easom and for the Dunmow Runners Rob Ellis, Simon Ashton
Jones and Richard Percy THE
ESSEX WAY RELAY 05/09/04 Grange
Farm Trotters Running Club fielded three strong teams as they ran their
way across Essex in sweltering temperatures this weekend. Twenty eight
runners from the club took part in The Essex Way Relay, which covered 82
miles of the Essex Way public footpath in ten legs starting from Epping
Station and finishing at the lighthouse in Harwich. The
race was mainly cross country with some road sections and was run as a
series of trail races with the runners following a set of printed course
directions. Rather than handing on a baton, each leg was run as a separate
race with the overall results aggregated to calculate the winning team. The
Grange Farm A Team came home in a strong 6th place, with the B
Team 9th and the C team 15th out of a total of 22
teams taking part. Top performances on the day came from Tom Offord who
came home 2nd on his leg between Chipping Ongar and Good
Easter; Steve Reed who was also 2nd on the Good Easter to
Little Leighs leg and Howard Jardine who finished third on the West
Bergholt to Dedham stretch. Two of the B Team runners, Steve Cardnell and
Duncan Anniss, managed to come home ahead of their A Team counterparts on
their legs. Special mentions should also go to Howard Jardine and Darren
Thomas who ran two legs on the day after last minute dropouts. Darren had
also completed a 75 mile bike ride earlier in the day on top of his 17
miles of running. The
overall winners were Springfield Striders A Team, who finished in the top
two places on most of the legs.

THE
JOG SHOP JOG 29/08/2004 Grange
Farm Trotters John and Sue Clarke were in off road running action again
last weekend as they tackled the extremely tough Jog Shop Jog 20.2 mile
Trail Race on the South Downs near Brighton. At
over twenty miles of length and featuring over 700 metres (2300ft) of
climbs, John and Sue felt this race ranked as one of the hardest they have
ever done. Roughly 90% of the course was off road, with several gates and
stiles. As ever in trail races the runners were following a series of
printed directions to cover the course and its five climbs with names such
as the North Face, The Big W, Death Valley and The Snake. 213
runners completed the course. John came in 128th in a time of
3hours 23 mins 25 seconds while Sue was not far behind in 137th
in a time of 3 hours 27 mins 10 seconds

FARM TROTTERS PRESS RELEASE 19/07/2004
PETER
CLEGG’S 99TH MARATHON Grange
Farm Trotter Peter Clegg now has just 26.2 more miles to run before he
clocks up a magical century of marathons. Last
Sunday 18th saw Peter compete in his 99th marathon
at the Fairlands Valley Challenge in Stevenage. The race was another off
road event, a trail race with written instructions to lead the runners
round the course, similar to the 98th marathon which Peter had
completed only seven days previously in Sussex. Humid
weather conditions and a tough course made for a challenging run, but
Peter was accompanied by fellow Trotter Howard Jardine and together the
pair got round in 4 hours 44 minutes, despite getting lost 5 times along
the way. The time was actually fifteen minutes faster than Clegg’s
previous best for this event recorded last year. Peter
has yet to confirm when and where he will clock up his marathon century
though he is hoping to do it sometime in August, hopefully with many of
his fellow Trotters there to cheer him on. THRIFT
GREEN TROTTERS 10K SUNDAY 18th JULY Four
Grange Farm Trotters were in action at the Thrift Green Trotters 10k road
race held in the scenic surrounds of Little Burstead near Billericay last
Sunday. Conditions
were good for running however the course was very hilly in the extreme.
This didn’t stop Robert Gall getting round in 46 minutes, followed by
John Hardy in 46.30, Rachel Offord in 47 minutes and Paul Offord in 52
minutes. THE
WOODHAM WOBBLE TRAIL RACE WED 14TH JULY Last
Wednesday night saw another of the many Trail Races popular in Essex at
this time of the year, this time held at the Lodge Country Inn off the
A132 near South Woodham Ferrers. The
race, which was held over approximately six miles of mixed terrain, saw
three members of the Grange Farm Trotters take part. First Trotter home
was John Clarke in 57 minutes and 4 seconds with the famous Grange Farm
“B Team” of Yan Stile and Trevor Hammond hot on his heels recording a
joint time of 57 minutes 30 seconds. GRANGE

FELSTED
10KM 11/07/04 Grange
Farm Trotters organised the second race in their Grand Prix series last
Sunday, the Felsted 10k. Piet
Jacobs of London Heathside club won the race, a fairly flat and fast
scenic run along quiet country lanes, in a new course record time of 30
minutes and 23 seconds. Second place was Adrian Mussett of Colchester
Harriers in a time of 31.14 while Ben Hellmers of Newham and Essex Beagles
came in third in 32.43. The
Ladies event was won by Grace Greenhalgh of Woodford Green and Essex
Ladies in a time of 36.36, with Margaret Deasy (Colchester & Tendring
AC; 37.00) and Clare Hayes (Chelmsford AC; 37.39) second and third
respectively. In
total 360 runners took part in the event including some of the Dunmow
Runners and Grange Farm Trotters who weren’t out marshalling the course. ONGAR
10k 04/07/04 AND GREAT BENTLEY 5 09/07/04 Grange
Farm Trotter’s club coach Howard Jardine continued his winning ways with
two more fantastic race results in less than a week. Sunday
4th saw Howard victorious in the Male Veterans over 50
category at the Ongar 10k, his time of 37 minutes and 20 seconds giving
him 7th
place overall in a field of over 220.
He then followed this up five days later with a run of 29 minutes
36 seconds in the Great Bentley 5 mile event last Friday, again winning
the over 50s category. This time was only four seconds away from Howard’s
personal best, with a virtually flat course and a slight following wind on
the last mile making for near perfect running conditions.
MAGNIFICENT
7 TRAIL RACE HIGH EASTER 07/07/04 Last
Wednesday’s atrocious storm conditions didn’t stop 18 hardy runners
turning out for the Magnificent 7 Trail Race organised by Grange Farm
Trotters club members Trevor Hammond and Yan Stile around the village of
High Easter. The
trail race (cross country with printed directions) involved runners
tackling 6.3 miles of nettles, fields of thigh high grass, woodlands, a
knee-deep ford and of course dealing with monsoon conditions as the
heavens well and truly opened. The
event was won by Kevin Wright of Springfield Striders in a time of 56
minutes 35 seconds, closely followed by Grange Farm Trotters duo John
Clarke and Sue Feldman in a time of 56 minutes 43 seconds, with Sue being
first lady home. The
other Grange Farm Trotters and Dunmow Runners taking part were: 6th
Howard Jardine 60.22 mins, 7th Duncan Anniss 61.03 mins, 11th
Katia Robertson 66.30 mins, 12th Darren McLaghan (Dunmow
Runners) 69.10mins, 13th Sarah McLaghan (Dunmow Runners) 78.10
mins, 18th Simon A Jones (Dunmow Runners) 123.00 mins
WINDMILL
MARATHON, ROTTINGDEAN 11/07/04 Grange
Farm Trotter Peter Clegg was back in marathon action last weekend,
tackling his 98th event over the distance. This
time round it was the Windmill Marathon held on the South Downs near
Rottingdean, Lewes and Brighton in Sussex. The race was an off road
marathon, described by Peter as “very hilly, if not mountainous in
places” and featured three very large inclines, the last of which had a
gradient of over 37%. It
was the first and most likely the last time Peter will enter this
particular marathon, which he described as “probably the hardest one I’ve
ever done”. He still managed to finish in a highly respectable time of 4
hours and 22 minutes. Peter
is hoping to complete his 99th marathon this coming weekend at
the Fairlands Valley event, another off road 26 miler.
INTER
COUNTIES FELL RUNNING Grange
Farm Trotter Pru Hayhow proudly represented the county of Essex in the
Inter Counties Fell Running championship at Langdale last week. Despite
a nightmarish experience involving tackling calf deep bogs, falling over
more times than she can remember and running uphill for a solid 40 minutes
straight in the pouring rain, Pru got round what was described by the
organisers in a somewhat understated fashion as a testing fell race and
lived to tell the tale.
JP
MORGAN CORPORATE CHALLENGE 08/07/04 Two
Grange Farm Trotters took part in the JP Morgan Corporate Challenge in
Battersea last Thursday, along with over twelve thousand other runners. The
race, which was started by Olympic triple jumper Jonathan Edwards, was run
over 3.5 miles. Rachel Offord completed the course in 25 minutes flat
while husband Paul got round in 28 mins 29 seconds GRANGE

A120
10KM 30/06/04 Grange
Farm Trotters running club once again teamed up with Balfour Beatty to
stage a 10km road race along an unopened section of the new A120 dual
carriageway last Wednesday evening. The race, which was open to members of
local running clubs and employees of Balfour Beatty, was run from the new
Dunmow South intersection with the A130 Chelmsford road, heading west for
5km towards Braintree, then returning back along the opposite carriageway. Trotters
coach Howard Jardine blew the rest of the field away to win the event in
35 minutes and 20 seconds. Howard, 52, has hit peak form this summer and
was pleasantly surprised to win the event. “It’s only the second time
I’ve ever won a race and the last time I thought I was second as it was
a bit foggy so it’s an unusual feeling being out in front”, he
remarked afterwards. Another
Trotter, Steve Read came in second in 35 mins 39 seconds while Peter
Beatty of the Road Runners Club was third in 36 mins and 7 seconds. First
Lady home was Sarah Blackburn of Springfield Striders in a time of 41 mins
and 54 seconds, closely followed by Grange Farm Trotters ladies captain
Rachel Offord in a time of 42 mins and 42 seconds The
event was staged to celebrate the opening of the new stretch of road on
Friday 9th July and to raise funds for the Essex Air Ambulance.
In total the 65 runners who took part donated £154 for this worthy cause.
There were 28 members of the Grange Farm Trotters and Dunmow Runners clubs
taking part, including local PC Kevin Rowe who finished in 54th
place in a time of 54.46. Full

RUNNING ASSOCIATION SHORT DISTANCE RACE SERIES 2003 Two
members of Grange Farm Totters picked up prizes for the national Trail
Running Association Short Distance championship for 2003, the results of
which were published last week. Sue Feldman was second overall and first
Lady having competed in 11 of the 15 events, while John Clarke was third
overall and first veteran. Andy Mason of Chelmsford club Springfield
Striders won the series. Trail
Running is similar to Cross Country, except the runners have to follow a
series of printed directions to get round each course. The Short Race
Series covered 15 Trail Races held throughout last year over distances
between 5 miles and 13 miles in length. Trail Running is very popular in
Essex for some reason and runners from this part of the world dominate the
national series. It
was a double celebration for John and Sue, who are due to get married
later this month. Congratulations to them both. GRANGE

MERSEA
ROUND THE ISLAND RUN 20/06/04 Three
members of Grange Farm Trotters Running Club tackled the challenging 13
mile Round the Island run at Mersea in Essex last Sunday. The
course was run off road and featured thigh length grass, hidden pot holes
and every runner’s nightmare, beach sand over the last four miles. Pru
Hayhow was sixth lady home, Darren Thomas was “approximately” 24th
male and Yan Stile was “hot on Pru’s heels” WILLINGALE
10K 26/06/04 Two
Trotters took part in the Willingale 10k organised by Dovedale Harriers on
Saturday. The
conditions were near perfect for running, with a slight breeze and a light
sprinkling of rain every now and again. Howard
Jardine produced another fine run coming home sixth overall in 37mins and
28 seconds while fellow Trotter Phil Sutterby managed 47 mins and 57
seconds.
GRANGE
FARM TROTTERS PRESS RELEASE 21/06/2004
PETER
CLEGG MARATHON MAN Marathon
Man Peter Clegg was at it again last week, running two marathons in seven
days. The super fit Grange Farm Trotter completed his 97th marathon last
Sunday having finished his 96th just one week earlier. Inclement
weather and a really hilly course turned last Sunday’s Potteries
marathon held near Stoke into a gruelling event. The weather turned just
after Peter had passed the halfway stage and for the next six or seven
miles the heavens opened. With temperatures dropping as low as 10 degrees
and a biting wind, most runners found themselves unprepared for winter
like conditions in the middle of June. Not so Peter however, who really is
in fine form at the moment, running this tough course in 3 hours 30 mins
and 37 seconds, 1 minute faster than he had performed at the considerably
flatter London marathon earlier in the year. The
Potteries marathon is a popular and long established event that has been
staged annually for over twenty years. Peter describes it as a ”small
version of the London marathon, the crowd support is phenomenal and they
really do encourage you” He
was less complementary about the course however “Every time you turn a
corner there’s another hill” Just
seven days earlier on Sunday 13th June Peter had taken part in
the Poppyline Marathon, closer to home in Sheringham, Norfolk near Cromer.
This was an off road route description marathon run over 26.5 miles
meaning that not only did Peter have to run a marathon, he had to run it
across muddy fields and trails and follow directions on a map! The
course took in the cliffs at Cromer, trails, fields, forests and hills,
“a bit of everything really” according to Peter. This was a really
fun, low key event organised by the Long Distance Walkers Association with
sandwiches and cups of tea at three or four points along the route,
however Peter was one of twenty hardy individuals who ran the course.
Conditions were unbearably hot but Peter still managed to get round the
26.5 (or probably nearer 27 allowing for getting lost) miles in 4 hours
and 49 minutes. Peter,
who will be 55 next week, has only been running marathons for the last
twelve years, entering his first London Marathon in April 1992. Like many
people, he thought this would be his one and only marathon, however he was
soon tempted to enter the New York marathon and decided how better to
train for a marathon than run one or two in the meantime? Since
then, Peter has managed to clock up an amazing 97 marathons, averaging
more than 8 every year, although, he says, “I don’t think I’ve
enjoyed one yet”. He is now looking forward to completing the century,
hopefully sometime later this year. GRANGE

38.54), the Little Dunmow ladies led the way. Former Trotter Will

FARM TROTTERS PRESS RELEASE 07/06/2004
DUNMOW 5 06/06/04 This
Sunday saw the first of the Grange Farm Trotters Grand Prix Series of
races, the Dunmow 5, which was organised in conjunction with fellow Dunmow
running club the Dunmow Runners. As
usual the event was very well organised, and the heat on one of the
hottest days of the year to date did not stop 221 competitors from turning
out to take part in Dunmow’s biggest organised road race. The
course took in a scenic 5 miles of countryside in the area from Dunmow out
towards Little Easton, starting and finishing at Helena Romanes School. Neil
Miller of Bedford & County Athletics Club won the race in 26 minutes
and 23 seconds. Second place was former Grange Farm Trotter Will Tamlyn,
now running for Chelmsford Athletics Club, in 26 minutes 58 seconds. Paul
Dobson of Springfield Striders came third in 27 minutes 22 seconds. The
ladies event was won by Sharon Morris, also of Beford & County AC,
setting a new female course record by seven seconds in a time of 29minutes
and 10 seconds. Leah Walland of Cambridge University was second lady in a
time of 31 minutes 13 seconds while Tracey Apps of Springfield Striders
came home third in 31 minutes 34 seconds. Due
to the fact that most of the club members were out marshalling the course,
there were not many Grange Farm Trotters or Dunmow Runners taking part,
but those that did finished in the following positions and times: Darren
Thomas (GFT, 27th, 33.07); Nigel Richardson (GFT, 50th,
35.43); Nigel Thomas (GFT, 71st, 37.23); Anita Coy (DR, 83rd,
38.39); Julie Beasant (GFT, 95th, 39.38); Steve Easom (GFT, 106th,

HATFIELD
BROAD OAK 10K 31/05/04 A
very strong Grange Farm Trotter turnout took part in the annual Hatfield
Broad Oak 10k road race last Bank Holiday Monday in sweltering conditions
for running. This
fantastically well supported event is always popular and attracted a field
of approximately 1200 runners this year. There were 24 Grange Farm Totters
and 9 members of fellow Dunmow club Dunmow Runners taking part. The
extreme heat led to one Trotter suffering from dehydration and ending up
in the St John’s Ambulance. Katia Robertson pushed herself to the limit
and beyond, collapsing shortly after crossing the finish line. Thankfully
Katia was OK after receiving medical attention and should be back in
action again soon. Trotters’
Men’s Club Captain David Cronk led by example, being the first Trotter
home in 114th place in a time of 41.02. Second Trotter was
Richard Humphrey in 140th and a time of 41.52. First female
Trotter home was Sue Feldman in 263rd place and a time of
45.10, closely followed by Ladies’ Captain Rachel Offord who completed
the course in 45.58 in 300th place overall. The
other Trotters and Dunmow Runners to take part were Matthew Kerry (Dunmow
Runners, 164th); Darren Thomas (Grange Farm Trotters, 194th);

& DISTRICT TRIATHLON SPRINT 06/06/04 Two
Grange Farm Trotters took to swimming and cycling as well as their more
familiar running as they took part in this year’s Braintree &
District Triathlon this Sunday. John
Clarke and Sue Feldman took part in the 400m swim, 22km cycle and 5km run
event that was organised by fellow Trotter and local PC Kevin Rowe. It
was John’s first triathlon and Sue’s second and both confessed they
were “novice” swimmers, however they acquitted themselves well, John
finishing in 1 hour 20 minutes and 8 seconds with Sue not far behind in 1
hour 26 minutes exactly. OTHER Grange
Farm Trotters are always looking for new runners of any standard to join
them. They are a friendly bunch and hold training runs every Wednesday
night at 7.30 from various locations in the Dunmow area. You can find out
where they are this week by visiting www.grangefarmtrotters.co.uk
or by calling Grange Farm Fitness centre on 01371 821298 and asking for

BADDOW
10 23/05/04 Sunday
saw five members of the Grange Farm Trotters Running Club taking part in
the Baddow 10 mile event amongst about 700 other runners. A
hilly course and the continued hot weather meant personal bests were not
going to be on the agenda, however the times recorded were as follows:
Howard Jardine 1 hour 4 mins, Darren Thomas 1 hour 9 mins, Rob Gall 1 hour
13 mins and Yan Stile and Trevor Hammond 1 hour 22 mins WHITE
PEAKS MARATHON Grange
Farm marathon man Peter Clegg was in action again this weekend only seven
days after his last marathon at Halstead, this time running in the White
Peaks Marathon. Peter
recorded his best time for over two years clocking 3 hours 24 mins and 39
seconds for the 26.2 mile course. Incredibly, given this was his 95th
marathon, for the first time ever Peter recorded a “negative split”
which means he ran the second half of the marathon faster than the first,
in this case by twenty seconds. MARLBOROUGH
DOWNS CHALLENGE 22/05/04 Whilst
Peter was clocking up the miles on the road, two other Trotters were doing
the same thing off road. John
Clarke and Sue Feldman took part in the Marlborough Downs Challenge, part
of the Trail Running Association series of races. This was a tough
cross-country race of 20 miles across the tracks, footpaths and rights of
way on the Wiltshire Downs, with the heat not helping matters. John
came home 40th in 3 hours 3 minutes and was 34th
male while Sue came in 41st in 3 hours 7 minutes and was 7th
female. WEST
HIGHLAND WAY Whilst
not taking part in a race, two other Trotters went on a busman’s holiday
running the 95 miles of sheer beauty and at times total wilderness that is
the West Highland Way last week. Chris
and Pru Hayhow set out on the 95 mile route from Glasgow to Fort William
and managed to run for about four and a half hours a day every day for
five days. The total time for the run was 22 hours and 19 minutes. According
to Pru, essential items on the journey included “A camera, large
quantities of Vaseline, woolly hat and a good appreciation of malt whiskey
as this undoubtedly fuelled us on our way” COMPASSES
CANTER TRAIL RACE AT THE COMPASSES, PATTISWICK 21/05/04 Last
Friday night saw Grange Farm Trotters club coach Howard Jardine organise a
six and a half mile Trail Race from the Compasses pub at Pattiswick. Eight members of the Grange Farm Totters club took part in the event which was won by Alan Smalls of Colchester Harriers in 39 minutes and 50 seconds. First Trotters home were the B Team Trevor Hammond and Yan Stile in a time of 54 mins 22 secs. Other Trotters taking part were Georgie Mackley 1 hour 07 minutes, Jane Prior, Caroline Claisse and Sue Evans 1hour 18 mins, Tamily Barker 1 hour 21 mins and Phil Sutterby 1 hour 25 mins GRANGE

HALSTEAD
MARATHON 16/05/04 Sunday
saw three members of the Grange Farm Trotters Running Club taking part in
the Halstead Marathon, part of the Essex Championships. Scorching
hot weather meant conditions were not ideal for marathon running, however
the Trotters acquitted themselves well. Dawn
Wallace was taking part due to the fact that she had to pull out of last
month’s London Marathon at the last minute through illness. Dawn
recorded a time of 4 hours
and 27 minutes and was 1st Lady over 50. Peter
Clegg runs marathons as often as most people would pop out to the shops
these days, recording a time of 3 hours 45 minutes. This was Peter’s 94th
marathon as he closes in on the magical century. The
other Trotter in action was club coach Howard Jardine who unfortunately
had to pull out after 14 miles due to aggravating an existing knee injury. TRAIL
RACE AT THE STAG, LITTLE EASTON 12/05/04 Last
Wednesday night saw the second of the popular Trail Races organised by the
Grange Farm Trotters “B Team”. This was a fiveish mile race run in the
Little Easton area from the Stag pub. Trail
Races are like a cross between cross-country running and orienteering with
runners following a series of printed directions to lead them through the
countryside. It is not uncommon for runners to get hopelessly lost so a
good sense of humour and spirit of adventure is essential. This event had
the added spice of a missing line of directions that just added to the
overall fun! There
was a strong contingent of Grange Farm Totters and Dunmow Runners taking
part in the event, which was won by Kevin Wright of Springfield Striders
in a time of 44.11. First Trotters home were coaches Howard Jardine and
John Willoughby, joint second overall in 47.30. Next Trotter home in sixth
and 1st Lady was Pru Hayhow in a time of 52.18. The
other Trotters and Dunmow Runners to take part were David Cronk (16th,
57.18); Paul Holman (17th, 57.35); Phil Sutterby (18th,
57.49); C.Childs (19th, 58.05); Sarah McLagan (21st- 2nd
Lady, 58.40); A.Cox (22nd –3rd Lady, 58.42); Rob Ellis (23rd,
58.42), John Clarke (24th, 58.49); Rob Kings (25th,
59.12); Sue Feldman (26th –4th Lady, 59.42),
Katia Robertson (27th – 5th Lady, 1.00.12); Matt
Kerry (28th joint, 1.01.10); David Kerry (28th
joint, 1.01.10); Chris Hayhow, Mags Sturgeon, Steve and Dawn Wallace (all
joint 30th, 1.05.30); Darren McLagan (34th,
1.07.20); S.Ashton-Jones (45th, 1.16.45) OTHER
TROTTER NEWS Two
other Trotters were in Triathlon action over the weekend. At the Eton
Sprint, Tara Corbett completed the swim, bike, run in 1 hour 9 mins. At
the Southwell sprint triathlon, Sally Baker was back in action yet again.
Sally was delighted with her time of 1 hour 3 mins, a personal best for
her on the course. Sally came 5th overall and 4th in her age catagorie. GRANGE FARM TROTTERS PRESS RELEASE 10/05/2004GREEN
BELT RELAY Many
commuters will have sympathy with members of local running club Grange
Farm Totters, who spent 26 hours this weekend circumnavigating London
around the M25 route. The Trotters weren’t stuck in traffic however;
they were taking part in the 2004 Green Belt Relay. This is a
tough 20-stage relay run over two days.
The event covers 211 miles and starts at Hampton Court Palace in
Surrey, heading west along the River Thames to Windsor before
circumnavigating London in a clockwise direction on a mixed terrain of
roads, towpaths, tracks and footpaths.
On the first day, after the first 10 stages and 112 miles the race
finishes just south of Chelmsford, recommencing at the same place on the
Sunday morning for the final 10 stages and 99 miles, finishing back in
Kingston, Surrey. The stages varied in distance from 7 to 14 miles and each
runner was required to run a leg on each day. The
course record is 21 hours and 10 minutes set in 2000 by the Ranelagh
Harriers who have won the event a record three times. The Grange Farm
Totter team managed to complete the course in a time of 26hrs 37minutes
and finished in 15th place out of 28 teams.
A team from Flanders in Belgium were the overall winners in a time
of 22hrs 12minutes. The most
impressive Grange Farm Trotters performance of the weekend was by Howard
Jardine, running the 11.4 miles from Little Berkhampstead to Enfield Lock
in 69 minutes, to finish in 3rd place on that stage. The
Trotter team members who took part were John Clarke, Sue Feldman, Chris
and Pru Hayhow, David Cronk, Yan Stiles, Trevor Hammond, Darren Thomas, Howard Jardine,
Rachel Offord, Steve Wallace, Dawn Wallace and David Kerry. The
Trotters are always looking for new members, all abilities welcome, anyone
interested in joining can contact them on 01371 821298 or visit their

always going to be a hard event, however, torrential rain turned the event
into a mud covered cross country race - very nice! Sue was second lady
& John came in overall 8th position (7th male in 34 min 21 sec.) after
a very competive finish. 05/05/04
